Wow, the second video of the new year, and it's another one of firsts - this time, mudslides! Let me back up a bit. On this ride we head to the hills to go to Laurel Canyon. If you're a music history fan, you might be familiar with this has the hot spot for all of the rock stars in the 1960s and '70s. They either lived there, partied there, or wrote a song about the place. Everyone from The Mamas and the Papas, The Eagles, The Beach Boys, Joni Mitchell - you name 'em, they were there!

There isn't a lot of shoulder room on Laurel Canyon, so I decided it'd be best to descend it rather than climb up. To get there, I wanted to have some fun, so instead of going the straightforward and easiest of the routes straight up Mulholland, I go through Bel Air to check out some more streets before connecting with Mulholland at the top.

After a handful of miles along the ridge, we're about to turn onto Laurel Canyon. I kid you not, we were 0.2 miles from the turn, and the road is closed! Now, normally I LOVE a good ol' road closure to bike through without cars. However, they weren't letting anyone through this time. Because L.A. has had so much rain lately due to the atmospheric river above us, the mountain was unstable and about to collapse! They said it'll be closed for at least a month, and you'll see there was already a significant amount of erosion and mudslides. Well, that's something we haven't come across yet!

Not to worry, when a road is closed in Los Angeles, there are plenty of others to choose from. Instead of going straight down Laurel, I cut into the neighborhood and wind through the houses before meeting back up and descending the rest of Laurel Canyon. It turned out to be an awesome route. I had never been through the neighborhood and kept thinking of all the rock stars who must've lived there! How cool! It was fun being a rock star for the day.
