Swimming with Whale Sharks and Manta Rays! - Cancun, Mexico - 06/21/21
After waiting over a year, in June of 2020, my wife Jill and I were all booked and ready to go on a Caribbean cruise when only thirty days before sailing, our cruise was canceled due to the pandemic.
Of course a year later, in June of 2021, cruise travel was still shut down and like most people, we really needed to get away.
As we still couldn’t travel by our preferred method, our friends who invited us on our canceled cruise a year earlier invited us to join them for a week at a resort in Puerto Morelos, Mexico.
We just couldn’t say no. Although it wasn’t the cruise Jill and I had planned for, it was great to finally travel again!
Our friends booked this excursion with DC Explorer where they say, “Don’t be just a Tourist, be an Explorer!”
Early that morning, our group of six were picked up right from our resort lobby in Puerto Morelos and taken to the DC Explorer meeting point in Cancun.
When we arrived, we completed our registration, paid our fees and boarded our boat to seek out the Whale Sharks.
We had a great captain and guide.
These are wild Whale Sharks and Manta Rays.
We had to go out to deep, open water just to find them.
Once we got out of the Cancun area, we experienced a long, rough ride moving at full speed for nearly an hour!
But it was worth it.
Once the captain located a group of Whale Sharks and Manta Rays in their feeding grounds, we were all ready to grab our GoPro's and jump right in!
We spent quality time in the water snorkeling and swimming with the Whale Sharks and Manta Rays with our certified guide at all times.
They were enormous, graceful, gentle and beautiful!
We took turns of two people per jump with the guide.
On our way back to Cancun, the captain made a stop at the north beach of Isla Mujeres for us to relax for a while.
We had some fish ceviche, chips, fruit and bottled water after our adventure.
There’s no experience quite like swimming with Whale Sharks.

I’m only describing the fantastic experience they gave us.
