This video goes over how to tow a trailer with brakes that require a 7 pin hitch port. Installing a 7 pin hitch on a Subaru would be costly and according to many shops, impossible. This is the only work arounds I have ever been able to find.

Here is descriorion of what I did:

I started by having Subaru put in a hitch mount which automatically comes with the 4 pin wiring. Then I bought a TEKONSHA RF brake controller, as well as a 4-7 pin adapter from autozone. Then I plugged it all in. The lights were working but the brakes were not. Turns out one of the 7 pins would normally supply 12v power but the 4 pin doesn’t so the brake controller wasn’t getting enough power. So we took the adapter apart, figured out which of the 7 pins was the power pin, connected a wire to it, and then spliced it into the power going to the 4 pin which is located in the trunk. So basically, we created a 5 pin connector within the 4-7 pin adapter. So coming out of the trunk well, is the 4 pin and 1 power wire that go to the 7 pin adapter.

The key is the brake controller. It works by recognizing that the brake lights are on and then triggering the trailer brakes to come on. Inside the cabin you have a remote to set the sensitivity.

I hope this helps!
