Siddharth says that anything can be explained in six steps. Just like how any melody can be played beautifully with six holes on a flute. But before we talk about the flute, let’s talk about the bamboo tree.

The bamboo tree is amazing. You water it and wait for a year, but nothing appears—no bud, no twig, nothing. You continue to take care of it, water it, and wait for another year, but still, nothing happens. Year three passes with no signs of growth, but you persist. Year four passes with no plant in sight.

You begin year five with the same passion you had on day one, and slowly, you start seeing some growth. Then, in six weeks, the plant grows to about 80 feet tall. It's 80 feet in six weeks, but not really. It took five years of effort before we could see any tangible results.

Similarly, I’m Harsh Dave, and I’m Priya. We are on a mission to help learners play beautiful melodies on the flute. I come from a middle-class family and did my schooling in Gujarati medium. My struggles began when I entered college, especially with English, as my English was more Gujarati. My friends often ridiculed me for my language and accent, especially in front of girls. Coming from a boys' school, this was new and often very embarrassing.

I didn’t have the financial capability to join any classes or sessions. The only thing I had was a straight flute given to me by my father when I was a kid. I tinkered with it for a few months and could play a few melodies. The sound of the flute gave me joy and satisfaction. My friends discovered my new skill and started appreciating me for my art. While English made it difficult for me to communicate, the sound from my flute became my voice. I kept playing my flute for the next three years, experimenting with different tunes. Finally, when I got my job in 2005, I found my guru after a year of struggle.

I have been learning the flute since then. The flute is my number one priority. In fact, Priya jokingly calls the flute my first wife, but it’s true; the flute is my first love. We got married in 2009, and for many years, from Monday to Saturday, I would go to work, and on Sundays, I would spend half the day traveling for my flute class. I never had time for family or friends' meetups.

People are addicted to many things like alcohol and food; I was addicted to the feeling I got when I played the flute. As I grew in my corporate career in 2012, I kept up my hobby and continued playing the flute.

In 2012, our hearts were filled with joy as we welcomed our precious little daughter, Svara. But two months after her birth, our world turned upside down. We learned she had a problem with her eyes. At Sankara Nethralaya in Chennai, we were told she had zero vision in her left eye and partial peripheral vision in the right eye. The doctor described her case as one in a million and said there was no cure anywhere in the world.

Our hearts were shattered to know our little beauty could not see the beauty of the world. We had two priorities: to make a lot of money to secure her future and to fill our lives with music. We weren’t sure how much Svara would be able to read and write, but music would always be with me, and I needed it to stand by her. From that point onward, we started thinking about music more actively.

I started my YouTube channel. Today, that channel has grown to about 64,000 followers. I soon realized there was a huge audience wanting to learn music. Fortunately, I had the privilege of learning from my guru, and in 2017, I partnered with him to start my own Gurukul. This was launched by Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia Ji, my guru. I quit my job to build this full-time. For the next one and a half years, we couldn't secure any funding, so I had to return to my corporate job in 2019. I had financial responsibilities, and Priya was holding the space on the financial front for me..."
