Officially denied as existing within the Russian Federation, the Ainu have long resided inside Russia. They are an ancient people who, over the centuries of Japanese and Russian colonialism, have had many parts of their identity shorn away. Now in the 21st century those Ainu and their descendants who remain in Russia are finding their identity and moving forward within the new world.
