Information about Foyle Metro:
Foyle Metro is a division of Translink that operates bus services in Derry. The service was opened in August 2017 following a 3m investment to update the city's bus routes and replace some of the older buses. 38 battery electric buses, including Wright GB Kites and Wright StreetDeck Electroliners, were delivered to convert the Foyle Metro fleet to zero emission in May 2023. Foyle Metro operates across 13 key corridors from the city centre, with an additional route 14A/B/C orbiting the city's north side from Ballymagroarty to Currynierin via Altnagelvin Hospital.

A new emissions-free Foyle Metro Service is coming to Derry~Londonderry featuring state-of-the-art electric buses, enhanced passenger information, on-board audio-visual announcements and contactless ticketing. We’re making real progress on this important zero emissions project that will see Foyle Metro operating a fleet of new state-of-the-art electric buses. All vehicles will be in operation later this year making Derry~Londonderry one of the first cities in the UK & Ireland to operate a fully zero emission urban bus service. This project supports Translink’s vision to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 and operate a net zero emissions fleet across Northern Ireland by 2040 - vital for tackling the climate emergency and driving change for a better quality of life for future generations.

There will be 38 new electric buses delivered for Foyle Metro services, a mix of Double Deck and Single Deck vehicles. All of the new vehicles will meet our latest fleet standards, i.e. high-back, high specification e-leather seats, wheelchair area / a space for a buggy, fully accessible and CCTV. They will have a new ‘Stealth’ front end and will also have glazed ‘A’ pillars in the upper saloon to provide a panoramic view at the front. USB Charging and Wi-Fi enabled. Amongst the most environmentally friendly buses in Ireland. Latest safety and intelligent driving features for high quality /enhanced safety and performance including external cameras replacing wing mirrors.
Innovative new bus sound system (Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System) to enhance road safety when travelling at slower speeds in cities given these vehicles are relatively silent. The buses will be fitted with a new audio-visual passenger information system including screen mounted overhead in the central aisle of the bus that tells passengers ‘next stop’ details.

Translink have invested over £3million in a striking new-look fleet and improved timetable. People in Derry~Londonderry can now enjoy the benefits of Translink’s new Foyle Metro bus service launched on 1 September. ‘Foyle Metro’ is a major development for the City’s public transport network. Operating across 14 bus corridors on a simplified route network, the service features an eye-catching new-look red bus fleet and attractive bus timetable designed to meet the future transport needs of the city. The new service will boost connectivity providing a frequent, reliable, comfortable and affordable way to travel. As part of the launch celebrations, Translink customers can enjoy a special £2 all-day ticket (child £1) available throughout September. Foyle Metro offers a range of enhanced connections to shops, amenities, schools, hospital and airport services along with improved integration with Goldline Express and NI Railways services.

First unveiled in 1997, the Alexander ALX400 replaced the step-entrance Alexander R-series and was fitted to numerous chassis, including the Dennis/TransBus Trident 2, the DAF/VDL DB250LF and the Volvo B7TL.
Various configurations were available, with Transport for London (TfL) models fitted with a central exit door. There are typically 45 seats on the upper deck, and between 17 and 22 seats on the lower deck depending on chassis variant and length. Longer models for use elsewhere have up to 47 seats upstairs, and 24 below. Stagecoach outside London have ALX400s on long-wheelbase Dennis Trident 2 chassis fitted with 51 seats upstairs and 28 downstairs. These buses have been used all over the UK, in cities including London, Birmingham, Manchester and Newcastle.
