Elegie No 2 dates from 1909, about the time as the 14 Bagatelles and For Children; curious that it seems to live in another world, Liszt and Debussy, perhaps rescued from sketches too good to be lost. Worth noting the first 5 notes are developed and transformed with Bartok's typical discipline. The curious notation left and right "pingpong paddles" indicate that that the repeating figures may be repeated as to the performers discretion. Here we hear it as written.
