Battle Of Mohi, 1241 AD | Mongol Battle Strategy | Mongol Invasion of Europe. In 1223, the Mongol Empire achieved a decisive victory against the Cumans, who were allies of the Russian principalities, at the Battle of Kalka River. This victory established the Mongols as a formidable threat to European territories. By the early 1240s, the Mongol Empire had expanded significantly, and its influence was increasingly felt in Eastern Europe.
Meanwhile, In Hungary, King Béla IV had taken in a substantial number of Cuman refugees fleeing from Mongol conquests. The Mongols viewed this as a direct challenge and a hostile act. They considered Hungary’s protection of their enemies as a provocative move, which justified their decision to launch a military campaign against the Hungarian kingdom.
That’s the reason why In late 1240, Batu Khan, a prominent Mongol leader, sent an ultimatum to King Béla IV. The ultimatum demanded that Béla cease sheltering the Cuman refugees. This was the second time the Mongols had issued an ultimatum to Hungary and both of them had been ignored by the Hungarian king. Of course, It was nothing but make Batu Khan’s blood boil.

They split into three main armies, each advancing in different directions. The main Mongol force, under Subotai’s direct command, headed towards Hungary. The second army, led by Kadan, grandson of Genghis Khan moved through Lithuania to attack Poland, preventing Polish reinforcements from reaching Hungary. The third force, commanded by Qutuz, advanced southward.

After Kadan's victory at the Battle of Legnica on April 9, 1241, which decimated the European and Polish forces, and Qutuz’s success in Transylvania around the same time, Subotai's army only needed to await the arrival of these forces in the Hungarian plains.
So the battle of legnica is very important and has a great influence on the following developments in the battle of Mohi, I leave the video link of the battle of legnica below so that you can follow and understand the overall background of the Mongol invasion of Europe, particularly in Hungary.
Now, back to the Hungary status quo, After a week of forced marches and frequent Mongol attacks, the Hungarian army, a collection of varied Hungarian forces, reached the flooded River Sajó.
