Georgia O’Keeffe shaped the trajectory of American modernism. From experimentations in her early career to the iconic organic forms she is known for, her paintings explore the emerging landscape of America. The Art Institute’s "The Shelton with Sunspots" provides a striking example of how O’Keeffe, inspired by the dazzling New York City skyline and the rise of photography, captured a swiftly modernizing city. Working alongside her husband, photographer and art dealer Alfred Stieglitz, as well as fellow artists and writers in their circle, including John Marin, Marsden Hartley, Charles Demuth, Arthur Dove, and Helen Torr, O’Keeffe reflected the electric pulse of 20th-century life.

Hear from curator and professor Annie Morse as she examines how O’Keeffe and other modern American artists of the Stieglitz circle captured New York’s dynamic cityscape.
