This walk down a couple of the main drags in Chiltern will give you an idea of what it looks like here. Chiltern was first surveyed for settlement in the early 1850s, but wasn't actually developed until the gold rush began in '58 or '59. The newspaper office opened up in 1859. I guess that's a pretty good marker for the beginning of a town.
