At least 54 people have died after consuming tainted alcohol in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu as of June 22, 2024. Since June 19, local authorities reported over 150 people had fallen ill after consuming alcohol mixed with methanol. Police have arrested four people suspected of selling tainted alcohol and seized about 200 litres of the product. Deaths from illegally produced liquor are common in India.
