I couldn't find any videos on how to do this so here you go folks: These guys let me film the key steps in fitting a new windshield to my 1965 New Yorker (i.e. C-Body MOPAR). These skills may be lost as people retire so I filmed it.
Rubber gasket was from Steele Rubber Products in the US.
Screen imported for me by a UK specialist.
Main steps:
- Use a pick type of tool to pull clips inward that hold the metal trim pieces on, then at same time use another flat tool to lift the trim out of each clip by gently twisting it.
- Lower metal trim uses a different type of clip that pushes through circular holes, remember the screws at each end just by each front door.
- We removed scuttle panel to give us a better view of how everything fitted together, although probably not strictly necessary.
- Gasket to screen first.
- Use cord method starting from top centre of the screen pulling the cord out in left and right directions. Note that the lower edge of screen fits down into a channel in the frame and the cord does not therefore have to go along this lower edge as there is no inner rubber lip that has to be lifted over a metal rim along this lower edge.
- These guys used cord about 8mm thick, much thicker than the curtain / paracord type I have used before, inserted into the screen gasket first using the nozzle of a caulk gun to help insert it. That seemed to work really well.
Everything went back in pretty well once we had worked out how all the various trim clips worked.
Use a non-setting caulk in case you ever have to do it again.
My screen had a small crack in one corner. In the end we decided to use it as took ages to get screen from the US, it was expensive, the crack was in the inner layer and I have had the screen here unfitted for many months in its box due to virus issues. They drilled tiny holes to stop spread of each tiny crack and used resin to almost make invisible the existing main one. The trim and rubber covered most of it too once installed.
