Merry Christmas!!

Boy does this one have quite the story behind it. I was eating supper at a burger place downtown when I got a text from ‪@thetexasrailfan‬ that one of the very last Southern Pacific patch units was leading train ILDYC through Austin! My poor family and I raced over to MoPac and floored it north, passing the head end of the train in the process. Due to an unprecedented amount of traffic, I was barely able to beat it to my usual spot under MoPac with good lighting.

The chase was on to Round Rock. It was easily able to beat us into said town, which left us with only one option: chase it east on Highway 79. While we initially had a tiny lead, every traffic signal would give a green light to the cross street as the train approached, to theoretically clear [nonexistent] cars off the tracks. This never let us get ahead of the train until Hutto, where I jumped out to quickly get a video. Since we were so close to Taylor where it would be stopping, we decided to just head on out there. Then, I met up with ‪@thetexasrailfan‬ and we watched it pick up some autoracks before meeting MFWSA.

Big thank you to my folks for chasing this train with me, as I couldn't have done it if they didn't agree to. This sure was a great catch and something that may never again happen on the Austin Sub! Please, Union Pacific, please send one during the day. Beggars can't be choosers.
