The Hakusan Shrine Spring Grand Festival, held every April 24th at Nou's Hakusan Shrine, features ancient bugaku court dances performed on a stage built over the shrine's pond. The dances were mentioned in the 1488 diary of a Buddhist priest visiting from Kyoto's Shotokuji Temple, so we know the festival and its dances are at least 500 years old.
On Jan 28, 1980, these dances were registered as a Nationally Important Cultural Property of Japan.
Hakusan Shrine itself is also a Nationally Important Cultural Property. The oldest building of Hakusan Shrine was last rebuilt in 1515, although the shrine's history dates back to prehistoric times.
