Cozumel is an island located in the Caribbean Sea along the eastern side of the Yucatan Peninsula about 51 miles south of Cancún and 12 miles from the mainland. Cozumel is home to the western hemisphere's largest reef system. Stretching for approximately 30 miles along the western coast of Cozumel, the reef system is part of the second-largest barrier reef in the world, second only to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Its strategic location within the warm, nutrient-rich waters of the Caribbean provides an ideal environment for the growth and sustenance of a remarkable variety of marine life. Jacques Cousteau first put Cozumel Mexico on the map when filming a documentary about the Palancar reef in 1959. He declared it to be one of the best places to dive in the world. These beautiful coral reefs were declared a national park in 1996. The dive sites of Palancar - from south to north - include: Punta Sur, Colombia, Palancar Bricks, Palancar Caves, Palncar Horseshoe
and Palancar Gardens.
