He's an American former professional baseball shortstop who played 20 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the New York Yankees.

A five-time World Series champion, Jeter is regarded as a central figure of the Yankees' success of the late 1990s and early 2000s for his hitting, baserunning, fielding, and leadership.

He finished his career sixth all-time in career hits and the all-time MLB leader in hits by a shortstop.

1. Prioritize
His mother instilled a positive attitude in her son, insisting that he not use the word "can't".

2. Work harder then other people
His baseball talents drew the attention of the University of Michigan, which offered him a baseball scholarship.

3. Compete to win
The Yankees drafted Jeter, who chose to turn pro, signing for $800,000.

4. Surround yourself with good people
Jeter began the 1992 season with the Gulf Coast Yankees of the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League.

5. Treat everyone fairly
In his first professional game, he failed to get a hit in 7 at-bats, going 0-for-7, while striking out 5 times.

6. Have confidence in your abilities
Returning to the Hornets in 1993, his first full season of professional baseball, Jeter hit .295 with five home runs.

7. Be who you are
He consistently placed among the AL leaders in hits and runs scored for most of his career.

8. Enjoy yourself
His accolades include 14 All-Star selections, 5 Gold Glove Awards, and 5 Silver Slugger Awards.

9. Be inspired by others
Teammates and opponents alike regard Jeter as a professional and one of the best players of his generation.

10. You're going to fail
He is the Yankees' all-time career leader in hits (3,465), doubles (544), games played (2,747), stolen bases (358).
