Jeremiah lived and ministered at the end of the reigns of Judah's kings and during the early years of Babylonian exile. He didn't choose to be born in that season. He didn't choose to be born in that place. He didn't choose his calling. He didn't choose the faithless response to his faithful message. He didn't choose to be beaten, thrown into a pit, placed in stocks, or taken to Egypt and exile. And yet, here he is, of no fault of his own, living through time many would label, "hopeless."

Many of us will go through "hopeless" seasons in our lives. We might be innocent victims, like Jeremiah. We may have contributed to our plight through our own sin and selfishness. Whatever the cause, the sense of hopelessness is real. It was for Jeremiah and his fellow Israelites.

It's in this context that Jeremiah 31-33 shines so brightly. In the midst of hopelessness, God promises hope. God promises restoration. God promises redemption. God promises to save the people and the nations. God shows, over and over again, that He's committed to giving us hope.
