When you are looking at notated rhythms, it’s important to remember that the notes convey more than just the notes themselves. In this video from Berklee Online’s Time and Rhythm course, instructor Matt Sharrock explains that a quarter note in 4/4 doesn’t simply represent that quarter note. It also represents the complete space in the measure taken up by that quarter note. We measure that space using subdivisions, and we need to remain cognizant of the fact that a quarter note takes up the space of four sixteenth notes. All notated rhythmic material falls on a grid of subdivisions, and we need to be able to place our rhythms correctly on that grid if we want to perform accurately. If you want to understand and play the rhythm written in a bar of sheet music, you should try writing in stems for all of the sixteenth notes that could exist within each measure plus the counting syllables that apply to each sixteenth note slot. Just like a good ruler accounts for millimeters and centimeters, in addition to the decimeters, our musical ruler needs to account for eighth and sixteenth notes, in addition to quarter notes.
