Multiversus are a really prevalent trend in cinema right now. A trend most recently seen in DC's latest box office flop, The Flash, and Spider-Man : Across the Spiderverse. Multiverses are a device that allows us to feed into nostalgia. Nostalgia can be good for the soul but it also feeds into our worst desires and instead of being fed tonally consistent storytelling in main stream movies, we're being fed cameos, easter eggs, references, winks at the audience from the writer/director, with not a whole lot of substance underneath. Sometimes you don't need substance, but this is just... kind of the worst.
