A boundary dispute between Ohio and Michigan erupted in 1835, with both states claiming ownership of a strip of land which included the City of Toledo. The area’s fertile soil and its location near Maumee Bay and Lake Erie made Toledo a desirable and profitable asset for early commercial commerce. Eventually, the boundary dispute was settled with a compromise. Michigan would be awarded what we now know as its Upper Peninsula, and Toledo would be located within the State of Ohio.

Ahead of Toledo’s Sesquicentennial celebration on July 4, 1987, The Maumee Valley Historical Society staged a reenactment of a battle between Ohio and Michigan militia members at the onset of The Toledo War. And Toledo Eleven’s Faith Murphy was there to give us a peek at all the action!
