The Liberal Party of Canada faced tough questions in the House of Commons on Tuesday, as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s political party suffered a second devastating byelection blow with the loss of its stronghold in the Montreal riding of LaSalle—Émard—Verdun.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre slammed Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland as an “incompetent finance minister” and repeated demands for a “carbon tax election.” Freeland responded by defending the Liberal Party’s track record of monetary policy and referencing recent inflationary figures.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, who spoke in Parliament for the first time since its return from recess, also criticized the Liberals for having let Canadians “down and down again.” He added that it was clear from the byelection results that “the Liberals are done.”

In addition to the Montreal byelection, Canadian voters also went to the polls in Winnipeg’s Elmwood—Transcona, where the NDP retained its long-held seat after a tough race against the Conservatives. Trudeau has already faced calls to resign as leader after unexpectedly losing Toronto—St. Paul’s to the Conservatives in a byelection this past June.
