The Castle of Sesimbra is the last of the Portuguese castles over the sea to maintain its medieval design.
The origins of Sesimbra Castle date back to the 9th century, period of Muslim occupation of the territory. With an eminently maritime vocation, since time immemorial fishing has been one of the main livelihoods of its inhabitants.
All this was forgotten in words,.....the current Sesimbra grew immeasurably with tourism, becoming a kind of "Albufeira" (algarve). Even so, it left a nucleus with some popular urban features (narrow streets, improvised esplanades, grilled fish, etc.) common to the entire district of Setúbal, which give it charisma and desire to be visited.
