The highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) has been circulating in the US and Canada among wild birds since 2021. However, avian influenza isn’t new; since it was first detected in Southern China in 1996, it has undergone evolution and iterations of H and N types and has been seen in several countries in 3 different continents. So why is it such a concern in 2024 and what is the reason for its spread to mammals including seals, foxes and now cows?
