This drive begins at Bluff Springs, Lincoln National Forest to White Sands National Park in New Mexico.

A bit of info on both places.

What is so special about White Sands National Park?
In addition to containing the world's largest gypsum dunefield, including gypsum hearthmounds found nowhere else on earth, the park is home to the globe's largest collection of Ice-Age fossilized footprints and tells more than 20,000 years of human presence, all while providing memorable recreational opportunities.

How long do you need in White Sands National Park?
You don't need a full week to explore every national park, and White Sands National Park is the perfect park to explore when you only have a day or two. As one of the few dog-friendly national parks, and with lots of roadside activities, White Sands is the perfect park for solo travelers and families alike!

Sand sledding, barefoot hiking: Welcome to White Sands National Park. There's a vast expanse in New Mexico where you can hike barefoot, sled any time of the year and feel like you're on another planet. Also, unlike silica sand, gypsum doesn't absorb heat from the sun. So even on the hottest day of the year, the dunes are cool and comfortable to walk on, making White Sands a nice stop in the summer.

Please remember the removal of any natural or cultural resources is prohibited. Resources include but are not limited to: paleontological, archeological and Native American artifacts, as well as gypsum sand and selenite crystals.

Lincoln National Forest:

Located in South Central New Mexico, the Lincoln National Forest is known as the birthplace of the world-famous Smokey Bear, the living symbol of the campaign to prevent forest fires. The original bear is buried in Capitan, New Mexico.

Explore one of 27 easy hiking trails in Lincoln National Forest that are great for the whole family. Looking for a more strenuous hike? We've got you covered, with trails ranging from 16 to 5,905 feet in elevation gain.

The Lincoln National Forest has not one, but three major mountain ranges: Sacramento, Guadalupe and Capitan that cover 1.1 million acres in southeastern New Mexico.

Elevations range from 4,000 to 11,500 feet and pass through five different life zones from Chihuahuan desert to sub-alpine forest. Vegetation types are very diverse across the Forest and range from rare cacti in the lower elevations to Englemann spruce in the higher. Temperatures vary with elevation.

Wildlife in the forest includes everything from Merriam's wild turkey to aoudads (Barbary sheep), black bears, mountain lions, wild horses, and Rocky Mountain elk.

Throughout the Lincoln National Forest you are allowed to do what is called 'dispersed camping'. This is a rustic experience where you are allowed to drive up to 300' off of designated dirt Forest Service roads onto USFS lands to park and camp.
