In this upcoming episode, we have the privilege of hosting Dr. Renu Swarup, a distinguished figure in the field of biotechnology and a luminary in the scientific community.
Dr. Renu Swarup, a former Secretary at the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, brings over 30 years of invaluable experience to our conversation. During her illustrious career, she served as the Chairperson of the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) and also held the Additional Charge of Secretary at the Department of Science & Technology. Her journey is marked by a deep commitment to advancing scientific research and innovation.
Armed with a PhD in Genetics and Plant Breeding, Dr. Swarup conducted Post Doctoral Research at The John Innes Centre in Norwich, UK, laying the foundation for her future endeavors. As a Science Manager, she played a pivotal role in policy planning and implementation, contributing significantly to the formulation of the National Biotechnology Vision and Strategy in 2001, 2007, 2015, and 2021. Notably, she served as a member of the Task Force on Women in Science, reflecting her dedication to promoting diversity in the scientific community.
In her role as the Secretary of the Government of India, Department of Biotechnology, Dr. Renu Swarup oversaw a vast network, comprising 16 Autonomous Research Institutes, 2 Public Sector Undertakings, and a Research and Development network with over 5000 projects across more than 100 research institutes, universities, and laboratories. During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, she led the charge in the COVID Vaccine, Diagnostic, and Genome Sequencing Mission, showcasing her leadership in crisis situations.
As the founding Managing Director and subsequent Chairperson of the Public Sector BIRAC, Dr. Swarup has been a driving force behind the support provided to more than 5000 startups and over 60 incubators, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in the biotechnology sector.
Her illustrious career has earned her numerous accolades, including being recognized as the "BioSpectrum Person of the Year" in 2012, the "National Entrepreneurship Award" in 2017, the "TiE Award" in 2018, the "Dr. P. Sheel Memorial Lecture Award" in 2018 by the National Academy of Sciences, India, and the TWAS Regional Office Prize on Science Diplomacy in 2018. Additionally, she was honored with the Agriculture Research Leadership Award in 2019.
