In Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science Dean Shih-Fu Chang’s office sits a special gift from a friend and colleague—an Apple IIc computer.

Released in 1984 by Apple Computer, the Apple IIc was the company's FIRST portable computer.

“The machine has a small monitor and can only display 24 lines of text,” Chang told Columbia News. “Think about your monitor today: you are posting about tens of thousands of lines on your high-resolution monitor.”

Computers and the field of computer science have come a long way since 1984, but as Chang said, “the impact on how we learn, how we work, and how we create is exactly the same.”
