Community leaders and rabbis worldwide are working tirelessly to halt the impending execution of a young Jewish man in Iran. Arvin Nathaniel Ghahremani, now 23 or 24 years old, faces a death sentence for allegedly killing an Iranian Muslim man, Amir Shokri, in self-defense.

Originally scheduled for early this week, the execution has been temporarily delayed due to international pressure. However, this reprieve is only for a month, and the execution could still occur without notice. Ghahremani's case has drawn significant attention and concern from human rights organizations and international Jewish communities.

📖 Background Story:
In 2022, an 18-year-old Arvin Nathaniel Ghahremani was ambushed by a group of individuals in Kermanshah, about 300 miles west of Tehran. Among the attackers was a man who owed Ghahremani money and another, Amir Shokri, who stabbed him. Ghahremani fought back in self-defense and tragically killed Shokri.

Despite Ghahremani's self-defense claim, he was convicted as an "accomplice to the intentional murder of a Muslim" and for "intentionally inflicting nonfatal injuries." The Iranian Jewish community has backed his self-defense claim, but the judicial system in Iran, which prioritizes the rights of Muslims over those of religious minorities, upheld the death sentence.

⚖️ Legal and Cultural Context:
In Iran, the family of a murder victim can choose to accept blood money (diyya) and grant clemency to the accused. Blood money is compensation paid by the offender to the victim's family as an alternative to capital punishment. However, Iranian law treats the murder of a Muslim and a non-Muslim differently. A non-Muslim who kills a Muslim faces the death penalty unless the victim's family accepts blood money. Conversely, if a Muslim kills a non-Muslim, the punishment is at the judge's discretion.

💸 Efforts to Save Ghahremani:
Efforts to save Ghahremani have included raising over $1.5 million from Jews in the US and other countries, offering the victim's family an apartment, and the construction of a mosque in Shokri's name. Unfortunately, these efforts have been unsuccessful, partly due to pressure from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Habibollah Ghafouri, Khamenei's representative in Kermanshah, who are pushing for Ghahremani's execution due to his Jewish faith.

Ghahremani's situation is particularly dire. The Supreme Court of Iran recently dismissed a retrial request, placing him at immediate risk of execution. The Iran Human Rights Organization (IHRNGO) has criticized the judicial process, citing oversight and lack of fair representation.

📢 Call to Action:
Iran's Jewish community, numbering about 8,300, faces ongoing persecution. Since the 1979 revolution, several Jews have been executed by the Islamic regime. Iran's judicial process is notorious for its harsh and unpredictable nature. Rabbi Moshe Margaretten, president of the Tzedek Association, warned that Ghahremani could be executed at any moment, without prior notice to his family.

The case has drawn parallels with other recent executions in Iran, where the regime has intensified its use of the death penalty against political and other prisoners, including Iranian protester Mahmoud Mehrabi and rapper Toomaj Salehi.

🙏 Join Us in Prayer:
Rabbi Yehuda Gerami, Iran's chief rabbi, has called on Jews worldwide to pray for Ghahremani's release. Despite the efforts and prayers, the situation remains critical. The regime's apparent enjoyment of the execution process, coupled with the lack of cooperation from judicial officials, makes the fight to save Ghahremani exceedingly challenging.

The international Jewish community and human rights organizations continue to work tirelessly to prevent the execution of Arvin Nathaniel Ghahremani. Their efforts highlight the ongoing struggle for justice and human rights in Iran, especially for religious and ethnic minorities.
