Together, the mixed horse manure and food scraps will attract the earthworms, and covering the mix with cardboard and mulch will make it even more worm-friendly. The cardboard also blocks out the sun and stops weeds from coming up.

For mulch I use a mix of hay, straw, green and dry grass cuttings, and some old dry leaves, and this layer will help the garden hold moisture. The multiple layers of organic matter will rot, break down and become high quality soil.

To plant into this garden, just dive in with your hands to make a small hole, fill the hole with good soil, and put a seedling into it. Add some homemade compost (optional) if you want to give it a little boost, bring the mulch up near to the plants for protection, and water it regularly. Keep it moist and you will grow a garden. This is an instant garden!

Although I use this technique, the garden I’ve made is far from instant. It took me weeks to prepare the site: Making a ramp down, digging out the area, shaping up the terraces, reinforcing the walls with rocks, making the rocky edges, and laying a few steps to more easily access the top terrace.

I wanted to combine two concepts laid out in the Permaculture Designer’s Manual: The Instant Garden Bed with the Circular Garden. By raising up a garden into circular shaped terraces, we can utilise space more effectively, planting more plants in less space, and take advantage of one sprinkler on top watering the entire garden bed, and thus save water in the process.

I bought the following seedlings from the website https://www.cocopot.es :

Kale | Pak Choi | Purple Cauliflower | Brussel Sprouts | Broccoli | Beets | Leeks | Spring Onions | Scotch Bonnet Pepper | Green Peas | Cucumber | Eggplant.

In this video I show you how to build an ‘instant’ garden.

This way to build a garden is arguably the easiest and only takes simple ingredients that are available anywhere. All we need to get started are some kitchen food scraps, horse manure, wet cardboard, and some mulch.
