Like I said, in this podcast I'm gonna explain 17 Italian idioms with the word "spalle".
If you use these phrases when you speak Italian, you will definitely make a good impression. In other words, you will impress everybody!
Why do I say that? Because these idiomatic phrases are typically used only by Italian native speakers. So, if you use them, you'll show that you know the Italian language very well.

1.
The first Italian idiom I would like to explain is: "alzare le spalle".
"Alzare le spalle" essentially means shrugging one's shoulders.

2.
The second idiomatic phrase I would like to explain is: "avere le spalle robuste".
It means being able to endure inconvenience and hardship.

3.
The third Italian idiom is: "avere le spalle larghe". This phrase is typically used in reference to someone's ability to cope with attacks or criticism.

4.
The fourth idiomatic phrase is: "avere una famiglia sulle spalle".
It means that one must support a family and provide for it.

5.
The fifth phrase is not an idiomatic phrase in the strictest sense, because it has a literal meaning.
The phrase is: "portare or trasportare qualcosa sulle spalle".
It means carrying something on one's shoulders,

The sixth idiom is: "prendersi qualcosa sulle spalle".
This idiom literally means taking something and placing it on one's shoulders.
Figuratively, it means assuming responsibility for something.

The seventh phrase is: "avere molti anni sulle spalle".
It means being old or very old.

The eighth Italian idiom is: "vivere alle spalle di qualcuno".
It means getting a living from someone else, that is, at their expense.

The ninth Italian idiom is: "voltare le spalle a qualcuno".
It means turning one's back on someone, that is, turning around. We turn around and turn our back on them because we are going away or we just don't care.

The tenth idiom I would like to explain is: "voltare le spalle alla fortuna".
It means passing up a good opportunity, missing out, missing an opportunity.

The eleventh Italian idiom is: "dare le spalle a qualcuno".
This phrase is incredibly easy to explain. "Dare le spalle" essentially means standing with one's back to someone.

12.
The twelfth idiom is: "mettere qualcuno con le spalle al muro".
Literally, "mettere qualcuno con le spalle al muro" means pushing someone to the wall.
Figuratively, this phrase means putting someone in a situation from which they can't run away.

13.
The thirteenth idiomatic phrase is: "lasciarsi qualcosa alle spalle".
It means stop thinking about something.
Some people say "buttarsi qualcosa alle spalle", other people say "gettarsi qualcosa alle spalle". The meaning is clearly the same.

14.
The fourteenth idiomatic phrase is: "parlare male alle spalle di qualcuno".
It means talking bad about someone when this person is not there or can't hear.

15.
The fifteenth idiom with the word "spalle" is: "prendere qualcuno alle spalle".
It means taking this person by surprise, approaching them from behind.
This phrase can also be used, for example, in reference to armies.

16.
The sixteenth idiom I would like to explain is: "guardarsi le spalle".
Literally, "guardarsi le spalle" means looking over one's shoulder. Figuratively, it means watching out.

17.
Lastly, I would like to explain the phrase "fare da spalla a qualcuno".
In everyday speech, "fare da spalla a qualcuno" means supporting this person and helping them accomplish a given endeavor, or do something.
