On December 1, 2019, Dr. Chip Colwell presented "Why Native American Voices Matter" for the Archaeology Southwest Tea and Archaeology series.

In 2001, Chip Colwell began a Preservation Fellowship at Archaeology Southwest, and it changed the direction of his work and life. Chip sought to better understand archaeology’s role in the world and improve the discipline’s relationship with its many stakeholders, especially Native American communities. The wisdom of mentors, the experiences of fieldwork, the space to experiment—all supported Chip in his work to build new bridges with Native American cultural leaders and change the direction of the field. Since then, Chip has joined a vanguard of scholars and tradition keepers in showing how collaboration and inclusion benefit archaeology. This talk presents Chip’s journey.
