The South Coast of NSW is where we learnt our biggest lesson for travelling Australia… the weather can really make or break how great a place is.

After leaving Canberra we headed to Shellharbour/Kiama where we sat down and figured out a rough plan for the coastline. Like many we checked out reviews on WikiCamps, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. We plotted our way and booked ahead sites so we could secure those sought after beachfront sites.

But…

the weather was terrible for most of our time. It was cold, windy, raining, rough dumping surf and generally miserable.

But because we’d booked and paid for all these sites we kept on trucking.

Don’t get me wrong - good things still came from this period of travel (it really cemented us mountain biking a lot on our trip with Josh upgrading to an e-bike plus that amazing tow strap to pull the kids up the trails, we saw seals and a sugar glider).

But realistically if we hadn’t gotten sucked into Insta FOMO we would have just taken it a day at a time and likely had gone inland to better weather rather than riding out the storms.

The places we saw were still amazing and, with the right weather, we’d happily go back there. But it taught us to watch the weather, check yourself for FOMO and to travel OUR way.

We hope you enjoy this episode and as always we love all your comments, likes and subscribes.

Happy adventuring!
