Auto PSRU's explains how a GM LS1 or LS3 coupled with thier propellor speed reduction unit gearbox works in an aircraft. This engine is an ideal choice for its power torque and low maintenance. Automotive engines have long been used in homebuilt, light sport and expiremental aircraft. In 2013 the FAA approved the use of the GM LS3 on the Cessna 172.
