Veronika Szűcs worked as a Fellow at the Weltmuseum Wien between December 2019 and November 2020 as part of her kültüřgemma! scholarship and prepared the alternative museum guide Andersrum – a graphic novel with protagonists from the permanent collection. The distinguished U.S. cultural anthropologist Beth Conklin talks to Veronika Szűcs about the Graphic Novel Guide and reports on her many years of research among the Wari in the Amazon region. Claudia Augustat, curator for the South America Collection, moderates the conversation.

Veronika Szűcs studied Art History and South Asian Studies in Budapest, Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and Comic and Illustration at the Accademia di belle arti di Bologna. Her favourite artistic formats are graphic novels and artist’s books; her works focus on the personal experience composed like a travel book or journal.
Professor Beth A. Conklin is a cultural and medical anthropologist who works with indigenous peoples of lowland South America (Amazonia). Her research focuses on the anthropology of the body, ecology, religion and ritual, health and healing, death and mourning, and the politics of indigenous rights struggles. Her book, Consuming Grief: Compassionate Cannibalism in an Amazonian Society, explores the transformational native cosmology that inspired the artwork from the Brazilian collection.
Claudia Augustat is curator of the South America Collection and head of the EU co-funded project TAKING CARE. She researches material culture and cultural memory, museums and colonialism and the decolonisation of museum practice.
Sponsored by the kültüř gemma! initiative.
