The rāga Balahamsa is indeed an exceedingly rare one to be used in Karnāṭaka music. Amongst the orthodox beliefs in the erstwhile Mysore Vāggeyakāras, this rāga was used especially in the vairāgya gītās (musical expositions to express worldly renunciation) in the past.

Śrī Mudduswamy Dīkṣita has used this rāga in this composition set to the ṣaśthi (sixth) vibhakti pratyaya to espouse the most revered and highly abstract spiritual knowledge. I have tried to indicate this in my explanation and exposition after my rendition of the kriti. It is set to the miśrajhampe tāla with 10 counts.

The sādhaka now sits at the lotus feet of his guru and now practices the various sūtras (axioms) taught by the guru during the dīkṣa sessions. The mood of the melodic content and the madhurākṣara lyrics highlights this aspect. I have sung this for this mood and elevation too.

Each line in the composition deserves huge explanations. These delineations would indeed take the reader to a new spiritual stimulus and bliss. But, alas, the total upload time would exceed and test the forbearance of my audience ! I know that it is not done at all and I haven’t!
