KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — Since news of Jerry West’s death circulated, reactions have poured in from across the country, but no one had a connection quite like two of West's closest friends from West Virginia.

"I describe him as the greatest basketball player to ever live," Willie Akers told Eyewitness Sports.

Akers would know best. Jerry and Willie have been friends a long time after meeting in their junior year of high school.
