क्यों सिर्फ दो गानों से मशहूर होकर, ग़ुमनाम हो गए ये गायक
kabban mirza biography I Razia Sultan
You will be mesmerized by the voice of a singer who sings only 2 songs:-
The year was 1983. Kamal Amrohi's most expensive and ambitious film 'Razia Sultan' was released. In this film, Dharmendra played the role of a Negro 'Jamal-uddin Yakub'.
Now, a slave could not be very knowledgeable about Negro songs and music, but according to the trend of Hindi films, being a hero, it was necessary for him to sing songs. So for this character, Kamal Amrohi and the film's music director Khayyam Saheb were looking for a voice which was raw but very rough, manly and melodious. The voice which sounded both good and melodious in the role of a fighting Negro.
Using an established voice for Razia Sultan's (Hema Malini) slave and lover Yakub (Dharmendra) in the film would not have done justice to the character and Kamal Amrohi could not compromise on this matter either.
So the search began for the voice of this fighting Negro. Auditions of fifty singers from all over India were taken but things did not work out. There was a touch of professionalism in everyone's voice and any roughness was also absent.
Kabban Mirza, a person working as an announcer in All India Radio, was also included in this audition. Kamal Amrohi Sahab gets S. Ali Raza advised Kabban Mirza to sing these songs. In Lucknow, Kabban Mirza used to sing marsiyas and nohes sung during the time of Moharram. Being from Lucknow, S. Ali Raza knew Kabban Mirza very well.
Kamal Amrohi Sahab and Khayyam found his voice suitable for their character. But Kabban Mirza told him that he had never learned singing. Even in the audition he was singing only folk songs. Despite much confusion, the search for Kamal Amrohi and Khayyam was completed.
Composer Khayyam was faced with the challenge of losing the song to untrained Kabban Mirza, which he accepted. To make the songs perfect, the recording of the songs started after giving necessary training in Sur-Taal to Kabban Mirza.
After the release of the film, both the songs created a stir in the music world. The divine magical music of Khayyam Saheb, the initial tunes of flute and santoor that touch the last pages of the heart and then the waves of Rabab. Amidst these musical instruments comes the heart-shattering voice of Qabban Mirza.
The depth from which this amazing, deep and strong voice emerged, also reached the same depth in the hearts of music lovers. Kabban Saheb became a voice because of his two songs. These two songs are, “Aai Zanjeer Ki Jhankar, Khuda Khair Kare..” and “Tera Hijr Mera Naseeb Hai, Tera Gum Hi Meri Hayat Hai.”
Even today both these songs remain milestones in the easy music of India. Whether one knows the story of Kabban Mirza or not, one definitely knows these two songs. These strange sounding evergreen songs of Hindi cinema are still heard a lot even today.
