I have the special honor of being with Betty McGowan, the best babysitter in the world. That’s how I first met Betty, however, she is much more than that. A teacher, a mother, and really, a living saint. She grew up in Manayunk, PA, She had a tough upbringing, an alcoholic father, and little money. She loved playing sports, especially baseball/softball, and held many records for her high school. She had nine children but knew how to stretch a dollar. She often had ten people at the table for all her meals. There was no indoor bathroom for five years. The 10+ people in the house would use a single outhouse. There were times when there was no washer or dryer, but the kids always had clean and ironed clothes. Speaking to her children, she kept a beautiful home and did everything she could for them, although, at times, it wasn’t easy.
