I said I'd never return to Cambodia, but 15 years later I realize how amazing this country is with a fantastic first day in Phnom Penh.

We started with breakfast at the Central Market known as Phsar Thmei, which is a beautiful building originally built by the French in old Chinatown. Today it's in fantastic condition and still a local market. I had Cambodia's version of Chinese congee called Bor Baw Sach Chrouk with pork and coagulated blood. Alan had a glass noodle dish with local crab that he ordered a second plate.
This is a great spot for seafood as it doesn't smell fishy and they are always running the water keeping it fresh.

We also picked up a watch for a friend and Alan explained how Asians feel about haggling and negotiation is not just about money but also the emotional transaction.
We then went to visit S21 also known as Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, it's a must visit for only $5 entrance fee but very heavy. You'll want to take a break afterwards.
We then saw a very different side of Phnom Penh as we were invited by Raffles to stay at Le Royal, a historical hotel on the other side of town. What I like about Raffles is they preserve history while also celebrating Khmer culture, especially in the food. We visited the famous Elephant Gin bar and also ate a tasting menu at their fine dining restaurant featuring Khmer food. It was the perfect day in Phnom Penh and I can't wait to see more of the country.
