Watering, and how to water, can be a challenge and different people have different preferences on how to water their plants.
In this video Roger focuses on how manage water retention in outdoor pots in the UK climate - in south Wales where from October through until April temperatures are cool and there is usually plenty of rain.
So, because of high rainfall overwinter while the plants are relatively dormant the soil can get too wet, so we use 'pot feet' to raise the pots off the ground and allow excess water to more easily drain away.
But now in mid-summer we have less rainfall, and the plants are actively growing and demanding lots of water, so we place the pots in larger saucers to hold in some excess water and provide an extra water reserve.
This is particularly important if we are going to be away for a few days and are concerned about the plants drying out, we can give them a good drink before we go filling up the saucers too, and we know that they have at least a few days of water before we need to ask the neighbors top have a look for us.
