Watch this KENS5 CBS San Antonio interview with Warriors Heart President/Co-Founder and Master Sergeant Tom Spooner for National Suicide Prevention Month with Reporter Simone Simpson about his personal recovery, their private treatment program and art therapy.

As 21-year U.S. Army veteran and Former Delta Operator who served primarily in Iraq and Afghanistan, Spooner shares that he’s also battled addiction, PTSD and suicide ideation – and then explains how art therapy helps their military, veteran and first responder clients heal.

From their 543-acre ranch in Bandera, Texas, outside San Antonio, Spooner explains how their warrior clients often express their emotions through paintings and sculpture during art therapy that is part of their 42-day inpatient treatment program.

When Spooner came home from combat, he felt alone. He adds that he found a tribe with fellow warriors who could understand his feelings. As a result, he started Warriors Heart to bring this group together so they could openly share their thoughts without feeling a stigma or shame for asking for help.

Spooner then explains that every work of art by Warriors Heart clients has a story behind it. When asked about the benefits of art, he adds, “it enables them to heal and get better.”

When asked what he would say to a warrior who may be feeling suicidal, Spooner emphasizes, “You’re for hope and inspiration. You’re worth it to your family. You’re worth it to your community. You’re worth it to yourself.”
