The German Army attaches great importance to light reconnaissance vehicles. In 1975, the Bundeswehr commissioned a new wheeled combat reconnaissance vehicle, named SpPz 2 - Spähpanzer Luchs (Lynx). The new armored reconnaissance vehicle was produced about more than 400 units, based on the all-terrain wheeled chassis.

Luchs has a combat weight of about 19.5 tons, a length of 7.74 m, a width of 2.98 m, and a height of 2.84 m.
