Bali we are back! Indonesia has brought us so many crazy adventures, especially East Java but... now we think that it's time to rest so we have found a comfortable spot in Singaraja, North Bali to relax for a couple of weeks.
Whilst here we have started to feel more like locals with our usual spots to eat Nasi Pecel every day, hanging out with locals and learning more about what life is like here in Indonesia.
Ceremonies have always been something that have fascinated us but we just never knew how to fully get involved and recently that answer came to us.
As we are staying with Agus, a local from Singaraja, he has invited us along to celebrate Tumpek Landep in a local way.
Tumpek Landep is a Balinese Hindu holiday celebrated every 210 days in the Balinese Pawukon calendar. It is dedicated to Sanghyang Pasupati, the god of iron and weapons. "Tumpek" means Saturday, and "Landep" means sharp in Balinese. During Tumpek Landep, blessings and ceremonies are conducted to honour sharp objects, such as knives, scissors, and other metal tools. Balinese people believe that by showing gratitude and reverence to these tools, they will be blessed with safety, sharpness, and durability in their daily use. It's a day to acknowledge the importance of these tools in various aspects of life, including agriculture, craftsmanship, and daily chores.
