Cheng Hoon Teng Temple (Malacca)

A.k.a. Kwan Yin Teng, mainly dedicated to Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy). It is believed to be the one of the oldest Chinese temples in Malaysia although its date of establishment is still controversial. It is mostly known to be founded in 1673 by the first Malacca Kapitan, Tay Hong Yong and the second Kapitan, Li Wei King. The renovation of temple was led by Kapitan Chua Su Cheong in 1801. During the Dutch colonial period, the temple was served as the administrative office of Kapitan. In 1824, however, the British colonial government replaced the Kapitan system with Teng Choo (leader of the temple) system. Therefore, Cheng Hoon Teng is not only a spiritual and social centre for Chinese community, but also functions as the official administrative centre and a court of justice. The temple has undergone many renovation and expansion. The inscriptions, plaque and even building itself are important for the study of Chinese community in Malacca.
