【A Kayak Roll without Hip Snap (Fong’s Roll /方氏翻滾), enables people with lower limb disabilities to roll a capsized kayak】

It is well known that hip snap/ hip flick is a critical skill to Kayak Roll & Eskimo Rescue. For people with lower extremity disability, in technical perspective, without any attaching devices (e.g., the thigh strap / belt), there was a technically impossible in Rolling & Eskimo Rescue. Yet, this video introduces an innovative skill (probably a breakthrough in the kayaking skills) to respond to this “technically impossible”.

The innovative skills in this video (Tentative named:Fong’s Roll/ 方氏翻滾) was developed in 2001 by Coach Alex W.K. FONG (Level 3 coach from Hong Kong Canoe Union, coach no. KL3-023)(recently reshot). The Feature of this skill is that without any help from attaching devices, the upper extremity movement replaces hip flick (rolling knee) during Rolling & Eskimo Rescue. My Design Philosophy is strengths perspective, which emphasizes & mobilizes the capacity of people with lower extremity disability (i.e. strong upper body) to replace weakness (lower body movement). The non-hip-flick concept of Fong’s Roll makes the technically impossible possible & creates an equal opportunity in participation in kayaking to people with physical disability.

Last but not least, hopefully, this video would be the start point for coaches in HK to share your valuable teaching experience & to be inspired to more innovative skills to create ability & to promote equitable access to kayaking to people with disability. Breaking the technical restriction creates possibilities. Your kind sharing would help the people with disability & the paddling sports. Thank you!

**This skill is applicable in HK sea condition. For your own safety, it is recommended being trained by a qualified instructor/ coach to get the best training effect & to reduce the risk of injuries.
