Dr. Tomas Streyer and his team of scientists activate a large particle accelerator in Switzerland, aiming to unlock the secrets of the universe’s origin. However, when the machine starts, it plunges the world into darkness, and the stars disappear from the night sky. Accused of stealing the stars, Tomas faces trial and is sent to work in isolation at the Extremely Large Telescope in Chile. As he watches the sky every night for nearly nine years, Tomas clings to a theory that the darkness will pass. Finally, on the 1,596th night, the first star reappears, bringing hope to a world that had lost its way.
