Jaisalmer is known as the Golden City due to all the buildings being made from the same yellow sandstone material. It's also the last living fort in India! As opposed to all the other forts I visited where you purchase a ticket to tour the fort/museum, the fort in Jaisalmer is actually still 'living' - it's full of houses, hotels, shops, restaurants. It's SUCH a cool place to explore as you can walk around all the little streets inside the fort and it seems like you're transported back to a whole different world!
I made some friends at hostels during my travels and we decided to explore Jaisalmer together. We started by renting an auto to take us outside of Jaisalmer to check out some attractions close to the city. Our first stop was Bada Bagh which means 'big garden'. It's an area full of lots of cenotaphs (chhatris) dedicated to the maharajas and royal family of Jaisalmer. We actually had to wait a little while before being allowed in as the maharajas brother had just died. Eventually the guards let us in and we were able to explore the cenotaphs in the area. It's a gorgeous location! However, it was SO hot - I'd recommend going for sunrise or sunset as opposed to the middle of the day. Next we drove back to the other side of the fort to Gadisar Lake. It's another gorgeous location close to Jaisalmer fort. We chatted with some of the men working there who said it was a filming location for many famous Indian films. You can also take a boat ride on the lake (which we didn't due to the heat) but it's still a great place to see! After that we walked to the Haveli Museum (aka Kothari's Patwon Ki Haveli/Patwa Haveli). This is another must see in Jaisalmer! We were told it's even more elaborate than the palace! After touring the haveli, we headed back to the fort to see sunset at the Sunset Palace Restaurant. Sunsets in Jaisalmer are gorgeous!! Then we went for a 'fancy' dinner at 1st Gate - a hotel/rooftop restaurant outside of the fort which has great nighttime views of Jaisalmer fort as well as live music! After finishing our day exploring, we went back to our haveli (the Desert Haveli) to have a beer on the roof with our favorite employee Jitu! I highly recommend staying at the Desert Haveli!! Next video will be from our overnight camel safari in the desert!
