Fourth part of a ten-part round trip through Franconia, with well-known places and less well-known insider tips that are definitely worth seeing.

Burg Gößweinstein
The castle was probably named after its builder, Count Gozwin. He was killed in 1065 after invading the Bishop of Würzburg's territory. A first documented mention of the castle "Goswinesteyn" is from the year 1076. At the time, Emperor Heinrich IV had Bishop Burchard II of Halberstadt, who was involved in the Saxon War, imprisoned there, which already suggests strong fortifications.

Schloss Schwarzenberg
1150 was the first documented mention of a castle owned by the Counts of Castell. However, this assumption is not undisputed, because the document can also refer to Schwarzenburg Castle near Waldmünchen. On the other hand, the existence of a noble-free family from 1215-1235, which ended with a sick canon in Würzburg in 1250, is certain. A little later, the castle appeared for the first time in the Casteller inheritance deed around 1258/1265; the tower was named in 1274.

Burg Freudenberg
1196/1197 the Würzburg Bishop Heinrich III. von Berg with the construction of Freudenburg Castle. According to research by Wolfgang Hartmann, the bishop was reacting to the recent transfer of extensive property titles from Count Palatine Konrad von Staufen, who died in 1195 and was wealthy in the Odenwald, to his son-in-law, the Guelph Duke Heinrich the Elder of Brunswick. The name of the castle was obviously based on the Frohburg of the Lords of Dürn, which was last mentioned in 1196. Hartmann was able to identify the relics of this castle with the "Räuberschlösschen" stables located about 600 meters down the Main from the Freudenburg.

Burgruine Wildenberg
The Romanesque castle, which was built around 1170 and was expanded in the early Gothic style around 1220, was the seat of the Lords of Dürn. The poet Wolfram von Eschenbach is said to have written parts of his verse novel Parzival here around 1205. In 1271 the castle was taken over by Kurmainz and has been managed by officials ever since. During the Peasants' War it was burned down on May 4, 1525 by farmers under the leadership of Götz von Berlichingen and never rebuilt.
