The Zaanse Schans is an open-air museum and conservation area, on the east bank of the Zaan River, which is north of Zaandam in the Netherlands. With its green wooden houses, it displays the traditional architecture of the area and has several functioning windmills and craftsman’s workshops, which are open to visitors. The Zaanse Schans is also home to the Zaans Museum.

This village is a unique part of the Netherlands, full of wooden houses, mills, barns and workshops. The Zaanse Schans attracts nearly a million visitors per year and it's one of the Netherlands' best loved attractions. The outdoor portion of the Zaanse Schans is open to view without paying admission, but opening times and entrance prices vary at each of its museums, workshops, and windmills.

In the 17th century, more than 600 windmills were placed in the vicinity of Zaanse Schans. This made the first industrial area a fact. The mills were used, among other things, for grinding spices, producing paint, wooden planks, paint and oil. A number of these mills still exist and you can now visit them. You can see from the outside but also from the inside how the wind-driven machines work.
