German development cooperation supported the improvement of water infrastructure in Likpe Mate, a small village in Ghana's Volta Region. The project upgraded the village’s aging water treatment and supply station by replacing inefficient pumps, over 40 years old, with modern, high-efficiency models. Solar PV systems were installed to ensure a sustainable, reliable, and uninterrupted energy supply. This intervention resulted in significant energy cost savings and is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 365 tons of CO2 over 25 years. The community of Likpe Mate benefitted from gaining stable access to clean, safe water, improving health and quality of life. This initiative demonstrated how sustainable energy solutions could strengthen rural water systems while reducing environmental impacts.
