What happens when you have a poor or faulty connection causing high resistance? A snowball effect takes place resulting in electrical catastrophe! In this video, I get a call from a friend in Costa Rica who was having power problems in his home. Protocol for an issue like this would be to call the power company to come and check it out and take remedial actions as the issue is in the meter socket and main breaker, and the removal of the meter is required to facilitate trouble-shooting and repair. The call was made and the appointment was set for 3 days to send a crew out. Not acceptable so sometimes you have to bend the rules in the name of common sense. The problem was a fault in a connection point that compounds, heat builds resistance, resistance caused more heat, and the result is a power failure to the home. The temporary fix was not addressed and 4 months later the problem reoccurred and the damage was more serious. The power company was called again, only this time the homeowner tracked down a crew and commandeered them to come address the issue within hours. In Costa Rica, the Linemen that work for the government run utility will work for cash on the side to get things like this looked after. (shhhh, don't tell!)
